Researchers present at University of Western Cape workshop
Cole Rischbieter, a Ph.D. student in physics, and his advisor, Dr. Shun Saito, assistant professor of physics, presented their research at a workshop hosted by the University of Western Cape in Cape Town, South Africa. Their travel was supported by the University of Missouri South African Education Program, which fosters academic collaboration between the University of Missouri System and the University of the Western Cape.

O’Malley wins medal from international steel manufacturing association
Dr. Ronald J. O’Malley, the F. Kenneth Iverson Endowed Chair of Steelmaking Technologies, has been selected to receive the 2025 Tadeusz Sendzimir Memorial Medal for Innovation in Steel Manufacturing Technology from the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST).

Chen’s robotic bridge inspection system wins ASCE’s 2025 Pankow Award
Dr. Genda Chen, the Robert W. Abbett Distinguished Chair in Civil Engineering and director of the Center for Intelligent Infrastructure and the INSPIRE University Transportation Center, has developed a robotic system to make bridge inspections faster, more comprehensive and safer. His invention, called the Bridge Inspection Robot Deployment System, or BIRDS, has been selected for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 2025 Charles Pankow Award for Innovation.

Myers named Educator of the Year by national concrete institute
Dr. John J. Myers, a professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, was named the 2025 Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Educator of the Year during the organization’s annual convention in early February in Indianapolis.

The UM System’s NextGen Precision Health program has announced the inaugural cohort of NextGen Postdoctoral Fellows. Dr. Sunjeev Phull, a postdoctoral fellow for chemical and biochemical engineering, was selected for this cohort of three out of 53 applicants through a competitive process.

Two teams of Missouri S&T students and alumni have advanced to the semi-finals of the Global Health Innovation Grand Challenge hosted by the Carle Illinois College of Medicine. The winning teams compete for a prize of $250,000 in funding to advance the development of their ideas into real-world clinical use.

Pernicka, M-SAT win grant for cubesat project
Dr. Hank Pernicka, Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, and the Missouri S&T Satellite Research Team (M-SAT) recently received a $275k grant from the University Nanosatellite Program to compete with 10 other universities to design, assemble and test a small spacecraft (“cubesat”) for an opportunity to launch into Earth orbit.
