The campus literary and arts magazine, SOUTHWINDS, is seeking new material for its spring 2016 issue. SOUTHWINDS welcomes original poems, stories, creative nonfiction, artwork and photography from all students, faculty, staff and alumni. The deadline is traditionally Groundhog’s Day, Feb. 2, so please submit your work soon to southwinds.mst.edu, or email swinds@mst.edu. Free student tickets available for “Good Kids”

Missouri S&T students with a valid student I.D. can receive free tickets for the Miner League Theatre Players performance of “Good Kids.” Free student tickets must be reserved in advance at the box office by calling 341-4219. Students will be asked to show their I.D. when they pick up the tickets.

“Good Kids,” a play about sexual assault, will be performed in Leach Theatre of Castleman Hall at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, through Saturday, Oct. 31, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1.

Students in several courses will receive extra credit for attending the play. Faculty members are asked to remind their students of this policy and that free tickets are still available.

If you receive a message that appears to come from an S&T student saying “The Office of IT Administrator has currently upgraded all mailbox (size). Please kindly click on: ‘Email Upgrade'” delete the message. Do not click on the link. Information on how to report SPAM or phishing emails is available on the IT website.

Funeral arrangements for Dr. John Best

Dr. John Best, former professor of civil engineering at Missouri S&T, died Tuesday, Oct. 6. Visitation will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, with a memorial service beginning at 1 p.m. at James and Gahr Mortuary, 1651 E. Highway 72 in Rolla. Memorial contributions are suggested to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

Dogs in the library

Evidence of bed bugs was found in a book in the Curtis Laws Wilson Library. As a precaution, a team from PrestoX Pest Control will be on campus with specially trained dogs to thoroughly inspect the facility. The inspection began Monday, Sept. 28, and is expected to be completed by the end of the week. The inspection process won’t impact regular library operations. Callers impersonate an officer from the Rolla Police Department or the IRS and manipulate the caller ID to make the call appear to come from an official source. Volunteer at the Fall Career Fair

The Fall Career Fair will be held 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, in the Gale Bullman Building. Career opportunities and employer relations (COER) is currently looking for volunteers to help at the event, with shifts available throughout the day. Doug Carroll to serve as acting chair

Dr. Douglas R. Carroll, director of the Cooperative Engineering Program between Missouri S&T and Missouri State University, has been named acting chair of civil, architectural and environmental engineering by Dr. Ian Ferguson, vice provost and dean of the College of Engineering and Computing. The appointment is effective immediately and Carroll will serve as acting chair until a new chair for the department is hired and on board, Ferguson says.
