The Philanthropy Fair is Missouri S&T’s way to support our local organizations and charity in a day filled with fun, food, prizes and philanthropy. The Missouri S&T Staff Council and the University of Missouri System Healthy for Life program are offering a healthy recipe challenge for all faculty and staff. Join this fun challenge by submitting a recipe by Friday, April 28, or simply attending the healthy recipe tasting event during Staff Day on Wednesday, May 17.

The Missouri S&T Observatory will open its doors at 10 p.m. Thursday, April 27, for viewing Messier 13, and again at midnight on April 27 for viewing the Ring Nebula. Messier 13 is a globular cluster of about 300,000 stars in Hercules. The Ring Nebula, or Messier 57, is a planetary nebula in the northern constellation of Lyra.

Staff Council is seeking donations for the Staff Day food auction, which will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, in the front dining area in the Havener Center. If you would like to donate food, please email Julie Creamer, business operations associate, at creamerjb@mst.edu.

The University of Missouri South Africa Education Program (UMSAEP) Committee invites proposals from faculty interested in participating in the academic exchange between the University of Missouri and South Africa. Opportunities include exchanges with the University of the Western Cape (UWC) located near Cape Town and collaborative projects between the University of Missouri and new or existing educational partners in South Africa.

The eighth annual Celebration of Nations will be held Sept. 30. This family-friendly event celebrates the culture and diversity of Missouri S&T. If you would like to volunteer and help at the event Sept. 30 or before the event on Sept. 29, please sign up online. Volunteers may register as individuals or as a group, including organizations, sororities and fraternities. Volunteers who sign up for two hours or more will receive a free T-shirt.

Support philanthropy on the Missouri S&T campus by eating at Applebee’s 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at the Applebee’s restaurant in Rolla. A portion of food and beverage sales during this time will go to supporting Spirit of Change — Random Acts of Kindness. Participants can enter to win gift cards, Miner Alumni Association gear and more while at the restaurant. Dr. Man-Chung Tang, a world authority on cable-stayed bridges, will present his views on art and innovation in design during a lecture at 3 p.m. Friday, April 21, in Room 125 Butler-Carlton Hall. The free lecture is part of the Neil and Maurita Stueck Distinguished Lecture Series for civil, architectural and environmental engineering at Missouri S&T. Get more details.

The campus community is invited to the Woman of the Year award ceremony and luncheon noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, at Hasselmann Alumni House. The 2017 Woman of the Year and the first winner of the Dr. Elizabeth Cummins Women’s Advocate Award will be announced at the ceremony. Come congratulate the honorees, mingle with campus colleagues and previous award recipients, and enjoy a complimentary light lunch after the ceremony.
