Mining Big Data seminar Nov. 6

Dr. Hon Wai Leong, an associate professor at the National University of Singapore and currently on sabbatical leave at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, will present “Mining Communities in Large Networks from Big Data” 10-11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, in Room 249 Toomey Hall. During the seminar, Leong will discuss how large graphs arise from big data, survey some of many algorithms for detecting communities in large graphs and discuss the reason for the proliferation of methods for detecting communities. The seminar is sponsored by the business and information technology department.

Call for proposals: teaching and learning tech conference

Educational technology is soliciting proposals to present at the ninth annual Teaching and Learning Technology Conference, which will be held March 17-18, 2016. Dr. Linda Nilson, founding director of the Office of Teaching Effectiveness and Innovation at Clemson University, will be the keynote speaker at the conference. Poetry reading sponsored by SOUTHWINDS

Attend a free poetry reading by teacher, scholar, sailor and poet Dr. Elizabeth Schultz, professor emerita of English at the University of Kansas, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in the Black Box Theatre, Room 143 Castleman Hall. The event will also include interpretive dance by Joan Stone. Schultz has published five books of poetry, including three in 2014. Dr. James J. Bogan Jr., Curators’ Teaching Professor emeritus of art history and film at Missouri S&T, will introduce Schultz. The event is sponsored by SOUTHWINDS, Missouri S&T’s literary and arts magazine.

Watkins Elected to IEEE Education Society Board

Dr. Steve E. Watkins, professor of electrical and computer engineering, was elected to the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Education Society Board of Governors. The three-year term will run 2016-2018. Watkins was one of four at-large members elected — the entire board consists of society officers, 12 at-large members and committee chairs.

Morgan to serve as president of MIDTESOL

Roberta Morgan, program director of the Applied Language Institute, part of international and cultural affairs, became president of the Mid-America Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (MIDTESOL) chapter on Friday, Oct. 23. After serving in this capacity for one year, Morgan will cycle to past-president the following year. MIDTESOL serves Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas, with a primary goal of providing support to those involved with English language teaching at all levels — K-12, refugee and university intensive English programs; teacher education and administration. The group has over 350 members in the region and is working to increase membership.
