Guest biological sciences seminar Aug. 31

Dr. Laura Schulz, assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology and women’s health at the University of Missouri-Columbia, will present a guest lecture at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, in Room 126 Schrenk Hall. Her lecture, titled “Maternal Leptin and the Fetal Programming of Offspring Adult Metabolism,” will look at the evidence that intrauterine environment affects offspring susceptibility to metabolic disease in adulthood. Opening Week thank you

Thanks to the cooperative efforts of the faculty, staff and students who participated in this year’s Opening Week, the new students had a positive experience. It takes a campus community to carry out these events for new students, and new student programs couldn’t have done it with your help. Developing early relationships with students, staff and faculty are instrumental in helping students make a successful transition to college life. Opening Week also establishes realistic academic expectations for new students and provides programs that promote academic success. New student programs would like thank everyone involved in Opening Week and looks forward to working with you in 2016.

Wellness chair massages

Healthy for Life is now sponsoring 15-minute chair massages for employees between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Mondays starting Sept. 7 and lasting through Oct. 26 in Room 204 Centennial Hall. Research shows the positive effects of massage therapy on job performance and mental alertness resulting in improved accuracy and reduced stress-induced illnesses. Anyone who has ever sat behind a desk all day will recognize the symptoms of workplace fatigue. Sitting in a massage chair opens up the back muscles, relieves strain on the neck and provides a gentle break for eyes usually glued to a computer monitor.

Gov. Nixon to speak at Bertelsmeyer today

The campus community is invited to attend a news conference and question-and-answer session by Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday, Aug. 26) at the plaza outside of Bertelsmeyer Hall. Nixon will visit campus this afternoon to discuss recently approved bond projects for higher education, including renovations to Schrenk Hall. He will also meet with university leaders and tour portions of Bertelsmeyer Hall.
