Melanie Mormile named associate provost of faculty affairs

Dr. Melanie Mormile, professor of biological sciences, was appointed associate provost of faculty affairs in July. In her newly expanded role, Mormile will continue to assist the provost’s office with faculty and workload assignment, promotion and tenure policy, and other matters in faculty affairs. She also will represent Provost Robert Marley on various committees and at events, including working directly with academic affairs officials at the University of Missouri System and on other UM campuses.

Tobacco-free campus resources available online

In less than a month, Missouri S&T will become a tobacco-free university. A new website, tobaccofree.mst.edu, is now available with resources to help campus community members with the transition to a tobacco-free campus. The site also includes information on how to quit tobacco use, available resources for students, faculty and staff, and how to address violations of the policy once it goes into effect on Aug. 1. A map showing boundaries of the campus will also be posted on the website soon.

Passing of Barbara Summers

Barbara Lois Summers, the wife of Dr. David A. Summers, Curators’ Professor Emeritus of mining engineering, died Friday, July 1. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7, at Christ Episcopal Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Null and Son Funeral Home. It’s just the “internet” now

Effective Wednesday, June 1, the Associated Press, the New York Times and other major media outlets now lowercase the term internet. Previously, most news outlets capitalized the term. The Missouri S&T style guide, which is currently under revision, will follow suit and recommend that writers lowercase the term internet in marketing or promotional materials. The updated style guide will be posted this summer on the S&T brand identity website.

Curators on campus Thursday, Friday

The University of Missouri System Board of Curators will meet on the Missouri S&T campus this Thursday and Friday, April 14 and 15, in St. Pat’s Ballroom A and B of the Havener Center. Thursday’s meeting begins at 8:30 a.m., with Chancellor Cheryl B. Schrader presenting highlights of the Missouri S&T strategic plan. Also on Thursday, the curators and interim President Mike Middleton will join Missouri S&T student leaders for lunch. On Friday, as part of board Chair Pamela Henrickson’s report, the board will hear from international students and campus leaders about international life on campus and Missouri S&T’s global reach.
