Five students represented S&T at the American Ceramic Society’s spring meeting. From left: Lucas Greiner, a Ph.D. student in materials science and engineering, Adekunle Adesanya, Reese Hutchins, Eugene Nugent, a junior in ceramic engineering, and Mary Lucy, a senior in ceramic engineering.

Adekunle Adesanya, a Ph.D. student in material sciences and engineering, earned first place and Reese Hutchins, a Ph.D. student in ceramic engineering, earned third place in the inaugural Glass Strengthening Competition organized by the Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation. The competition was held in conjunction with the American Ceramic Society’s spring meeting in April in Bellevue, Washington.

Participants strengthened identical glass samples using approved methods before live steel ball‑drop impact testing. Adesanya’s ion‑exchanged glass sample withstood impact from a height of 151 centimeters.

The work reflects research activity within the Missouri S&T Glass Group, led by Dr. Charmayne Lonergan, assistant professor of materials science and engineering.
