University Police has received reports of a scam targeting cryptocurrency users. Criminals impersonate legitimate crypto companies and notify victims that their accounts are being accessed from another country. Victims are instructed to transfer funds to a separate wallet, which is claimed to be more secure. After the victim provides access information, the suspect withdraws their funds.

To protect against these scams:

  • Do not call phone numbers or respond directly to email addresses or text numbers provided in unsolicited messages about your cryptocurrency accounts.
  • Always verify suspicious messages by independently locating your vendor’s official contact information.
  • Never respond to unsolicited emails or texts requesting money or financial information.
  • Be cautious of phishing attempts, including simple messages or questions sent to your cell phone, because they may be the beginning of a scam.
  • If you receive threatening messages from individuals who claim to be government officials demanding money or gift cards under threat of arrest or deportation, contact law enforcement immediately.

If you receive a suspicious email or text and suspect fraud, contact University Police before responding or sending any funds. University Police, located at 205 W. 12th St., is available 24/7 at 573-341-4300. In an emergency, call 911.
