When Phoenix Schmidt, a first-year student in civil engineering, and two friends found themselves stranded after a minor accident on a frigid night, it wasn’t just any first responder who came to their rescue — it was Officer Keith Rader from S&T Police, who became what Schmidt affectionately called “the best ‘Uber’ driver” as he safely delivered the shivering students home. This compassionate approach demonstrates why Missouri S&T celebrates its dedicated police during National Police Week, May 11-17, recognizing officers who provide vital protection and services that extend beyond traditional law enforcement.

The officers protect the campus community 24-7 through foot and vehicle patrols and monitoring security cameras. The department’s fully-commissioned officers serve under state law with jurisdiction on all university property and within Rolla city limits.

Beyond standard policing, the employees conduct preventive patrols, investigate incidents, respond to emergencies, manage parking operations and provide security for campus events. Officers exceed typical enforcement duties by doing things such as organizing community fundraisers, participating in charity events and offering assistance to students facing personal challenges.

The department has earned reputation for its approachable presence, with officers known for checking on students during late-night study sessions, providing escorts across campus after dark, and connecting struggling students with campus resources.

The force includes commissioned officers, security guards, parking enforcement personnel, administrative staff and student campus service officers. This structure enables the department to deliver specialized services tailored to university needs.

The department’s commitment to community extends through many outreach initiatives, including the annual “Shop with a Cop” program benefiting local children, food drives during holiday seasons, and participation in campus mental health awareness events. Officers also volunteer their time for student-led activities, building connections that foster mutual respect and understanding.

The department emphasizes the values of honesty, integrity and partnership in its approach. Employees treat all individuals with equality, courtesy and compassion, reflecting organizational commitment to professional ethics.

National Police Week provides the S&T community an opportunity to express gratitude for these essential officers whose dedication and professionalism support Missouri S&T’s mission by creating a safe, welcoming environment for all. The university recognizes and appreciates the sacrifices and commitment these officers make daily to protect and serve the campus and Rolla community.
