Sir Harry Bhadeshia, whose research related to steel earned him a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 2015, will speak at Missouri S&T Wednesday, April 16, and Thursday, April 17, as part of the university’s 27th A. Frank Golick Memorial Lectureship.

Sir Harry Bhadeshia

Bhadeshia, a professor of metallurgy at Queen Mary University of London and emeritus Tata Steel Professor of Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge, is known for developing several new steels, including carbide-free steel used in railway lines and super bainite, a steel used as an armor.

At noon Wednesday, April 16, he will discuss the scientific evolution of steel during a talk titled “The Wonder of Iron” in Room 125 Butler Carlton Civil Engineering Hall. Refreshments will be served at 11:30 a.m.

The following day, Bhadeshia will deliver a more technical talk titled “The Intriguing Alloys of Iron, By Design?” that will discuss the potential to create new steels — both as concept-alloys that may have limited practical applications and those that could be produced at scale to address real-world problems.

Refreshments will be served at 3 p.m. in the McNutt Hall Commons, and the presentation will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Planje Auditorium, located in Room 204 McNutt Hall.

Both talks are free and open to the public.
