- Set and stick with working boundaries, such as time set aside each day for getting organized, working on projects, and eating lunch. If you work in a shared office space, communicate with those around you to let them know your needs, or if you need complete silence, then consider working in a designated space for focused work.
- When possible, minimize decision fatigue in the workplace. To reduce this, make the most important decisions first in your workday, and limit and simplify your choices. Decision fatigue can also be reduced by making decisions collaboratively in a group of your peers where everyone’s ideas are heard and shared.
- Do not overcommit and learn to say no. We have all heard this before, but make sure to continue saying no when you need to.
- Make your health and well-being a priority, even at work. This includes getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods consistently, drinking enough water throughout the day, taking breaks throughout the day, moving your body and getting away from your desk, and making time for your hobbies and personal care needs!
- Openly talk about the importance of work-life balance to encourage others to make it a priority. Share tips and ideas, and get new ideas as well. Talking about it in the workplace can ensure a system-wide change for the better.
- Do your best to disconnect from work when you aren’t there. Consider removing work email access from your phone/personal devices, avoiding conversations surrounding work concerns, and actively living in the moment at home with your loved ones. Of course there will be times when disconnecting is not possible, so in these instances, try to limit your extra work down to a few easily-completed tasks or setting a time limit (and follow it strictly!).
- Bring calming or comforting things into the office. This can be pictures of loved ones or pets, a lotion with a relaxing scent, a book for your lunch break, your favorite coffee beans or breakfast, etc. Anything that can bring you comfort and peace without being distracting to your coworkers.
