In 2023, S&T’s information technology team began focusing efforts on and communicating to employees about the transition to the Windows 11 operating system so campus computers comply with UM System Information Security policies and guidelines. In fall 2025, Microsoft will stop supporting the Windows 10 operating system.
As of Wednesday, Aug. 21, IT has updated or replaced computers to achieve 78% conversion to Windows 11.
Who is affected?
All users with campus-managed computers that currently run Windows 10.
What has been done?
At the beginning of the year, IT started coordinating efforts by working directly with departments to identify old computers that need to be replaced. IT also provided information about an opportunity to participate in a Dell bulk buy to purchase new Windows 11 computers at a discounted price. During the summer, IT contacted users who had computers that could be upgraded to Windows 11 to schedule an appointment for their upgrade.
This fall, another bulk buy will be scheduled. Departments and users will be given a link to order replacement computers or upgrade computers that meet the requirements. Watch for future communications to help make sure all campus computers run Windows 11.
