2021 Explosives Camp at Missouri S&T
Looking for a summer adventure for your children? Join scientific innovators for an exciting summer on the Missouri S&T campus. Missouri S&T Summer Camps are all about discovering and exploring what it takes to have a future career in the business, science, communication, math, technology, and engineering fields. Campers have the opportunity to learn about explosives, tour a nuclear reactor, explore diverse engineering careers, create art, serve as environmentalists, travel to the edge of space, and prepare to become future STEM leaders.
Camp sessions include:
Aerospace Camp – Prepare to blast off for three fun-filled days on the Missouri S&T campus. Experience aeronautics and space flight from a ground-up perspective, as you learn about the history of flight, astronomy and space exploration. Your three days will be filled with computer simulations, interactive teamwork activities and practical hands-on experiences. For Rising 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders in fall 2022. (July 19 – 21, 2022)
Art of Science – Join other “future” creative scientists and explore unique ways to photograph, write and create multimedia art through natural discovery at S&T’s Field Station campus.
Campers will investigate the natural wonders to be found in the Ozarks and explain their findings through writing, photography and multimedia art. Working independently and as part of a team, campers will learn about science and then express what they learn in various artistic ways. From bugs and bark, to fungi and flowers, campers will learn to see science in a different way, as well as expand their ideas of what art can be.
This is truly a hands-on camp, where personal expression is spotlighted and group dynamics expand ideas and insight on natural art and science. There will be endless opportunities to be inspired, as well as being the inspiration to others, which will all be showcased in the end-of-camp Art Show. For rising high school 9th, 10th and 11th graders fall 2022. (June 26 – 30, 2022)
Camp Invention – Camp Invention is a non-profit educational outreach program from the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation. Your child learns science, technology, engineering and math in a weeklong experience that taps into the spirit of innovation. No matter if your child wants to be a rocket scientist, an engineer or a second baseman, Camp Invention is sure to teach lifelong lessons. For children entering 2nd – 6th grade in fall 2022. (June 21 – 24, 2022)
CyberMiner Camp – Campers who love working with computers and digital technologies will learn about information visualization and big data, compete in an AI challenge, build and program robots, and so much more! Missouri S&T, Missouri’s premier technological university, boasts the nation’s second-oldest accredited Computer Science program, an innovative IST program and terrific Computer and Electrical Engineering departments. CyberMiner Camp is a perfect way to explore these majors, learn about Missouri S&T and college life, AND make new friends who share your interests! For Rising 11th and 12th graders in fall 2022. (July 10 – 14, 2022)
ASM Exploring Materials in Your World Camp* – Are you a highly motivated learner with an aptitude for math and science? If you are, then you should explore your interests by spending a week at Missouri S&T’s Materials Camp. You will actively explore materials science and engineering principles through a combination of mini-demonstrations, field trips and group projects. With the help of experts, you will learn how to use state-of-the-art research equipment. You will also explore career opportunities available for those in the materials and engineering fields. Requires application and acceptance. Application is open to rising 11th and 12th graders, fall 2022. (July 24 – 28, 2022)
Explosives Camp* – The Summer Explosives Camp – the first and best camp of its kind! – provides a unique opportunity for hands-on learning experience with explosives. Participants will experience a variety of demonstrations, presentations, projects, and handling and shooting explosives. Camp culminates in the setup and shooting of a fireworks display.
It will encompass detonators, high explosives, blasting agents, rock blasting, display fireworks and demolition. You will have a behind the scenes look at how explosives are used in industry and entertainment. But the number one thing that you will do at the Summer Explosives Camp is have fun! Requires application and acceptance. Application is open to rising 11th and 12th graders, fall 2022 (must be 16 years of age and U.S. citizen or permanent resident). A background check is required for students age 18 and over. (Session 1: June 5 -10, 2022 and Session II: June 12 – 17, 2022)
Formula SAE Electric Car Camp – This week-long residential camp will give you the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of Electric Vehicles and the Formula SAE competition. We aim to help you gain some insight of what being on a collegiate design team is like. For rising 10th, 11th or 12th graders in fall 2022. (July 24 – 28, 2022)
Jackling Introduction to Engineering – During Jackling Introduction to Engineering, you’ll be introduced to a variety of engineering fields with demonstrations and activities related to each discipline. You will learn about what engineers do, what tools they use and how the various engineering fields affect everyday life. Engineering and science groups will present brief overviews of their areas of focus and the exciting technological challenges on which their graduates work. Choose from a suite of activities each afternoon that will include interactive workshops and problems that may include software development, aerospace testing and problem-solving, exploration of state-of-the-art engineering materials breakthroughs, and the process of product development and testing. Rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders in fall 2022. (Session I: June 12 – 16; Session II: June 26 – 30; Session III July 10 – 14, 2022)
Nuclear Engineering Camp – If you are interested in nuclear engineering, this one-week summer program will introduce you to the fascinating world of nuclear power and the outstanding opportunities in nuclear engineering. For rising 11th and 12th graders in fall 2022. (June 26 – July 1, 2022)
Robotics Camp – Come to campus ready to learn the basic principles of robotics at this hands-on camp, which includes electronics, sensors, motor and servo control, programming and control techniques as well as robotics applications in today’s society. Using the LEGO® Mindstorms™ Robotics Invention System, teams of participants will have the opportunity to invent, design, build, and program robots while learning the basic structure of computer programming. By integrating motors and sensors with the NXT microcomputer, students will program their robots to respond to their environment, react to light, avoid obstacles and accomplish amazing things. For rising 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th graders in fall 2022. (June 7 – 9, 2022)
Space – The Final Frontier – Are you ready for an intense hands-on challenge to design, build, and fly a small satellite? S&T’s Space the Final Frontier Camp is unlike anything you have ever experienced. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to encounter the edge of outer space.
Your math and science skills will be used to design and construct a small spacecraft to be launched on a high-altitude balloon to 100,000 feet. Throughout the week, instruction will include satellite building and testing, laboratory tours, and interviews with aerospace engineering faculty and students.
The camp will conclude with a high-altitude balloon launch, during which you’ll track your satellite as it travels to the edge of space. After the satellites are recovered, you will receive images and data captured by your satellite from the edge of space that have never been seen before! Rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders fall 2022. (July 17 – 21, 2022)
Sports Camps – Miner camps offer a series of physical development programs by Missouri S&T’s physical education and athletic departments. Programs provide sessions of instruction and play in a number of sport activities. Athletics at Missouri S&T is conducted in a manner to protect and enhance the physical and educational welfare of student-athletes. Miner camps provide athletes the opportunity to develop their abilities in an environment that promotes sportsmanship and physical development. Surrounded by Ozarks scenery about 100 miles west of St. Louis, the Missouri S&T campus is accessible, safe and friendly. Dates and age requirements vary by camp.
