Students with chronic health conditions often have a unique set of needs to consider as they start college. Steps taken now can help students begin their college career familiar with campus resources and prepared for challenges related to managing their condition while adjusting to college life.
Here are a few suggestions:
- Contact Student Accessibility and Testing if your student plans to establish accommodations at Missouri S&T. In addition to accommodations, Student Accessibility and Testing can assist with instructor notification of conditions like seizures and food allergies.
- Know where on or near campus to get care should the need arise. Become familiar with services offered by Student Health Services, Student Well-Being, and local providers.
- As much as possible, schedule follow-up visits ahead of time with your student’s providers so that appointments can take place during breaks.
- Make arrangements for any prescriptions that need to be filled while your student is away from home.
- Stress the importance of staying healthy including getting enough sleep, eating the right foods, and maintaining treatment. Help your student prepare to keep their routine, maintain their treatment plan, and monitor their health while at college.
These general suggestions apply broadly to a number of conditions. For suggestions specific to your student, contact your student’s provider.
