Dr. William E. Horst will present the sixth annual Dr. Thomas J. O’Keefe Lecture at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in the Planje Auditorium, Room 204 McNutt Hall. Horst’s lecture is titled “Life after MSM: Reflections on a Mineral Processing Career.” A reception honoring Horst will be held 2:45-3:30 p.m. in the McNutt Hall commons.
Horst’s mineral processing career includes various research and production positions with U.S. Smelting Refining & Mining Co. and Foote Mineral Co. He joined the metallurgical engineering faculty at the University of Arizona in 1962 and started his metallurgical consulting business in 1969. Horst retired from AMAX Extractive Research & Development as vice president and director of research in 1984 and continued his consulting business on a part-time basis for the next 10 years. He was also on the Board of Directors of Carpco Inc., a manufacturer of magnetic and electrostatic mineral separation equipment.
He earned a bachelor of science degree and master of science degree in metallurgical engineering from Missouri S&T in 1951 and 1952, respectively, and earned a Ph.D. in metallurgy from the University of Arizona in 1967. Horst was honored with professional engineering degrees from the University of Arizona in 1982 and Missouri S&T in 2005.
