An opinion piece by Chancellor Cheryl B. Schrader, titled “STEM education: Where the girls are not,” was published in today’s edition of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The article points out the widening gender gap in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. “While the majority of U.S. college students today are female, they remain a minority in many science and engineering fields,” Schrader writes. “If universities are to meet the future demands of our economy, we can’t leave half of the college-bound population on the sidelines.”
