Engineers aren't known for their communication skills, and that's exactly why Dr. David Van Aken, professor of materials science and engineering, decided to write a book to address the issue.
Van Aken is the co-author of a new textbook titled Reporting Results: A Practical Guide for Engineers and Scientists, published this month by Cambridge University Press. Van Aken wrote the book with Dr. William Hosford, a colleague in materials science from the University of Michigan.
According to Van Aken the idea for the book came about after 22 years of teaching undergraduate laboratory classes and from the frustration of not having a text that specifically dealt with writing engineering reports.
Missouri S&T faculty interested in reviewing the book for consideration in their course work may obtain a free copy by logging on to the Cambridge University Press website.
The University of Missouri System recently started a weekly podcast to share topics of interest throughout the entire university community.
Jennifer Hollingshead, the UM System's interim director of communications, conducts the interviews and produces these podcasts. Her latest podcast is with Andrew Careaga, Missouri S&T director of communications, to talk about the campus's name change. Other recent podcast topics include economic development, finance and administration, human resources, and the emergency alert system. Tune in or view the podcast archives at http://www.umsystem.edu/ums/departments/ur/interact/ .

Blackboard will be upgraded to version 8.0 over the summer. This includes vast improvements in functionality and features. Some of the new features that will be available are highlighted after the jump.
• Grade Center – A new and much improved way of keeping track of students’ grades. This feature supports an interface similar to a spreadsheet, directed e-mail to students and the ability to generate progress reports.
• Blogs – Gives instructors and students the ability to create blogs and journals within a course, providing a structured and engaging forum for writing about course-related topics, projects and ideas, reinforcing critical thinking and reflective learning strategies.
• Wikis – Enables students and instructors to collaboratively create interactive, multimedia websites within a Blackboard course. In a collaborative online workspace, individuals and teams author, organize, and present their work.
• Blackboard Scholar – A social bookmarking web site that allows students and instructors to collect and tag links to online resources and share those resources with other interested individuals.
Educational Technology will provide more information about using these new and improved Blackboard tools as the summer progresses. Watch the EdTech website for self-help materials and the schedule for a Blackboard seminar series in the fall semester. If you don’t find what you need here, or have specific questions, please contact EdTech for more information at a edtech@mst.edu . Stay tuned for more information!
