UMR has been in the news in Springfield a lot this week. The Springfield News-Leader published a story on UMR's enrollment successes and the UMR Solar House Team was the subject of a story on KOLR-10 (CBS) and Fox newscasts in Springfield. Also, a feature story about the Human-Powered World Speed Challenge Team and its quest to break the collegiate land speed record next week in Nevada will air on KOLR-10 tonight during the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts.
The UMR public relations office is in the process of redeveloping the eConnection and we want your input. Our goal is to make the eConnection the ideal internal communications tool. Your suggestions will help us do that. Please take a minute to fill out a survey online.

The Career Opportunities Center is in need of additional suits to assist students in preparing for interviews for full-time, co-op and internship opportunities. We began the semester with a full closet and are down to almost nothing due to the success of our suit closet. The student research seminar series featuring math and statistics lectures continues Monday, Oct. 1. Aaron Goldsmith will present "Forcing the GCH (Generalized Continuum Hypothesis)" from noon to 1 p.m. in Room G5 of the Rolla Building. The campus community is welcome.

The UMR Writing Center will present its fourth annual “Inspired by Writing” Art Show. All local artists are invited to display their work that has been inspired, in some way, by writing. There is no submission fee to participate. For additional information, contact Lorraine at 341-4436.
The art show's opening reception will be held from 3-6 p.m. Oct. 18 in Rooms 113 and 114 of the Campus Support Facility. Refreshments will be provided.
Dr. Peter Wu, vice president for research and development and chief scientist of Spirit AeroSystems, will speak on "Aircraft Design, Manufacturing and Innovation" at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in Room 125 of the Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Building. Wu is speaking as part of the Porth Lecture Series. The lecture is open to the public, and all students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.
UMR will host its Fall Career Fair from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in the UMR Student Recreation Center. The Career Opportunities Center reports that 285 employers have registered to attend, which accounts for approximately 750 recruiters. Nearly 2,500 students are expected to attend.
In an effort to meet all constituent needs the COC has set the following schedule:
8-10:30 a.m. -- UMR faculty and staff may attend to meet employers
11 a.m.-3 p.m. -- Open to UMR students and alumni only
3-5 p.m. -- Open to all UMR faculty, staff, students and alumni
UMR's National Transportation Center is seeking applicants for its Graduate Fellowship Program. “Graduate Studies and Research in Transportation Areas” was developed to help recruit and support new UMR Ph.D. students with transportation interests.
Applications are currently being accepted for new Ph.D. students who wish to start in the spring semester of 2008. The applications are due by Oct. 15. Research assistantships, consisting of a one-year financial aid package of $22,000, are available for outstanding students.

The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity is the first participant in UMR's new plastic recycling program, called "Adopt-A-Building."
The fraternity has adopted the Curtis Laws Wilson Library and is responsible for maintaining the plastic recycling receptacle in this building. The receptacle is located in the Computer Learning Center area on the second floor of the library. Pi Kappa Alpha has made a commitment to be a leader in the area of plastic recycling among student groups. The University of Missouri needs undergraduate ambassadors to share their research experiences with state lawmakers in Jefferson City during Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol in April, 2008. Faculty members are asked to nominate students. Selection will be based on geographical distribution, the relevance of the project to the state of Missouri and the overall quality of the project.

The CIO Search Committee will host an open forum today with the final candidate for chief information officer. Margaret Cline, an information technology consultant, will respond to questions from the campus community from noon to 1 p.m. today in St. Pat’s A of the Havener Center.
From 1998 to 2005, Cline was CIO at Eastern Michigan University where she was responsible for all areas of information technology. While at the university, Cline created and maintained a robust, active and collaborative IT governance structure involved in issue identification, planning and decision making for technology issues on campus. Cline has also held adjunct positions at University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Western Kentucky University and Eastern Michigan University.
Cline earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and a master’s degree in communications from Western Kentucky University.

Wilson Library's new website will go live on Wednesday, Sept. 26. The library's goal was to create a more attractive site that would provide users with easier access to library resources. The content of the site has been updated, and its design and structure have been changed to improve its navigability, organization and appearance. Constitution Day will be observed with a public recitation of the preamble to the U.S. Constitution at noon on Monday, Sept. 17, in St. Pat's Ballroom C of the Havener Center. Events will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dr. James Giglio will present "What we can learn from JFK" at 12:15 p.m. The Constitution was signed Sept. 17, 1787, and ratified June 21, 1788.

The Porth Lecture Series was established by a provision in the will of Miss Virginia Lee Porth. Harry William Lee Porth graduated from the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy with a bachelor's degree in mining engineering in 1911 and earned a professional degree in 1924. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma social fraternity and Tau Beta Pi, engineering honor fraternity, and he played basketball from 1907-1911.
Porth worked for the Nevada Hills Mining company and then went to work for Swift and Company in Chicago. He served in several engineering assignments in the Swift plant at the Union Stock Yards and was in charge of the railway car department until his death, March 2, 1925.

UMR undergraduate Michael Purser will discuss the fundamentals of "set theory" Wednesday, Sept. 17, from noon to 1 p.m. in Room G5 of the Rolla Building. UMR IT will be distributing critical security updates via the SUS servers on all IT-supported Windows XP machines with a campus-standard install on Monday, Sept. 17. These updates will improve the security of the Windows XP operating system and Microsoft Office 2002 and 2003.
Customers who use IT-installed computers (faculty, staff, CLC computers, etc.) may be prompted to reboot their computers starting 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18. Customers with administrative privileges may be prompted before 3 p.m. The affected computers will automatically reboot themselves if no one is logged in.
UMR IT recommends that all IT customers save their work before the servers are updated to keep from losing any data. Internet Explorer 7 (IE 7) will NOT be installed as a part of this update. IE 7 is not yet compatible with a number of Web applications commonly used on the UMR campus, including PeopleSoft and Documentum Web Publisher. IE 7 will not be installed on campus-standard machines until after UMR IT determines that IE 7 is compatible with current campus Web applications.

UMR IT will be performing critical security updates on all campus Windows and Linux servers on Thursday, Sept. 20, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday. This process is similar to the standard Windows desktop security updates but affects many of the campus computing services available. During the maintenance window, customers may have difficulty accessing a number of services, including e-mail, web applications (for example, https://help.mst.edu), applications that need to access the licensing servers, and any other service hosted on the campus Windows-based or Linux-based servers.
Interruptions in service will last from 5-30 minutes, depending on which service is updated. UMR IT recommends that all IT customers save their work before the servers are updated to keep from losing any data. A webcast training workshop on environmental management systems (EMS) will be offered from 1-2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in the Havener Center. The moderator will be Bob Herbert, director of Virginia Tech's Local Government EMS Resource Center. Environmental management systems help local governments and other organizations reduce risks and liabilities, improve compliance and environmental performance, and reduce operating costs. Implemented in the Fall 2005, the Academic Alert System is a web-based application that replaces the paper version of the former Early Warning System. The system supports communication among instructors, advisors and students in cases where students are not meeting academic course requirements. The system is intended to improve student retention through increased early intervention.
The Academic Alert System includes a detailed reporting function. Customized reports can be created at the individual, departmental or division level. To create a customized report, visit the web page at http://academicalert.mst.edu and click on “Detailed Reports."

UMR public radio station KMST will host its annual membership picnic from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at Lions’ Club Park on U.S. Highway 63 South in Rolla.
Reservations are required for the picnic. Those interested are asked to RSVP in advance by calling the station at 341-4386 or 888-776-5678.
KMST will supply the main dishes, which include pulled pork and brisket sandwiches provided by Swiss Meat & Sausage Company in Hermann, veggie burgers and hot dogs. Family and friends are welcome to bring a covered dish, salad or dessert. Beverages will be provided by Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. of Rolla.
This year the picnic will include a baking competition with categories including pies, cakes and miscellaneous. Special activities for younger members include an inflatable bounce slide and water balloon throw.
KMST’s Volunteer of the Year 2007 will also be announced and awarded at the picnic. Several dedicated KMST volunteers have been nominated, including Bob Fossey, Jesse Singleton and Colin Smith, Bill Ricker, Chili Allen, Richard Cavendar and Bonnie Prigge, Suzanne Paule and the PCRMC Marketing Dept., Lois Ann Marler, and Shirley and Bill Andrews.

Dr. Dee Haemmerlie Montgomery, Curators’ Teaching Professor of psychology, has been named interim chair of that department, effective Sept. 1, 2007. She succeeds Dr. Robert Montgomery, who is now the graduate coordinator for the psychology department.

The UMR football team got into the win column for the first time this year Saturday night, topping Wisconsin-Stout 28-10 at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. The Miners got 304 yards passing from Brad Guidry and 231 all-purpose yards from Ashton Gronewold. More sports.
The CIO Search Committee has narrowed down the applicants to the top three candidates. Starting next Tuesday, Sept. 11, the first candidate will be on campus for a tour, interviews and an open forum. During each visit, the campus community will be invited to an open forum. This will be your opportunity to meet the candidates.
At this time, the names of the candidates are not being released. But the names will be released along with a short biography on the day the candidates are here. The schedule is as follows:

Malgorzata Marciniak, a graduate student in mathematics, will speak on introductory topics in the theory of differentiable manifolds from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10, in Room G5 of the Rolla Building. Marciniak will continue with a session from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the same room. This is part of a student research seminar series. By order of the Governor, all flags at state facilities will be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, Sept. 11, in recognition of Patriot Day. Flags will remain at half-staff until dusk on Sept. 11.
At 12:44 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, an unidentified caller to the UMR Police Department reported a bomb in "the building" set to detonate in 15 minutes. UMR PD evacuated the Campus Support Facility for approximately 35 minutes while police investigated the call. No bomb was found and the deadline passed, so faculty, staff and students were allowed to return to the building.
Similar threats were made on Monday, Sept. 3, and Wednesday, Sept. 5. UMR Police indicate they're making progress in the investigation to identify the caller.
Due to technical difficulties, notices of the first two bomb threats weren't delivered to the student listserv. The problem has now been resolved.
Susan Morales of General Motors will be on campus Sept. 17 to give a technical presentation, "GM Redefines the Crossover Segment-- Outlook, Acadia and Enclave." Morales is a vehicle chief engineer, midsize crossover SUV, at GM. All students and the campus community are invited to attend the presentation from 4-5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, in the St. Pat's Ballroom of the Havener Center. Vehicles will be available for review after the presentation.

Saturday is Fort Leonard Wood Appreciation Day at UMR. The cross country, volleyball and football teams will all host events. All individuals with military identification cards will admitted free to the volleyball match with nationally-ranked Rockhurst that gets underway at 3 p.m., as well as to Saturday night’s 6:30 p.m. football game with the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
A fireworks show during the halftime intermission of the football game will be included in the activities Saturday night. A group of at least 200 soldiers are expected to come to Rolla from the Fort Leonard Wood base for the games. More.
MOREnet will be upgrading UMR’s primary Internet connection at 7:15 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6. This will take approximately 30 minutes to complete, during which time customers on campus may experience brief interruptions (1-2 minutes at a time) of Internet services.
MOREnet links Missouri to a world of knowledge through a statewide research and education network. Schools, public libraries, academic institutions and state agencies linked to the network have access to a secure broadband Internet connection, staff training, technical support and electronic resources, making equitable access possible across Missouri.

Opening weekend for UMR Volleyball is almost here. Friday, Sept. 7, is Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. Faculty and staff will receive $1 off admission to the contest against Drury with a UMR ID. Free pizza and T-Shirts will be given to "serving" contest winners. Saturday, Sept. 8, is Military Appreciation Day. Admission is free with a military ID. Free pizza and T-shirts will be given away following a "hitting" contest.
Faculty and staff members will receive free admission to either the women's soccer match against Drury or the men's match with Drury Friday, Sept. 7. The women's game starts at 5 p.m. and the men's game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at the UMR Soccer Field.
