Research on ants’ lifestyle gets attention

Findings by Missouri S&T researchers suggest that ants need work-life balance to survive. Dr. Chen Hou, assistant professor of biological sciences, led the research team that wrote, “Heterogeneous Activity Causes A Nonlinear Increase in the Group Energy Use of Ant Workers Isolated from Queen and Brood.” The article is published in the February 2017 issue of Insect Science. The research team includes Dr. Zhaozheng Yin, assistant professor and Daniel C. St. Clair Fellow of computer science; Nolan Ferral, a sophomore in biological sciences; Kyara Holloway, a junior in biological sciences; and Mingzhong Li, a Ph.D. student in computer science.

Siau and Yin go on camera about robots, laws

Two Missouri S&T faculty members are featured in a news story on laws regarding technology such as self-driving cars, drones and robots. The KRCG-13 TV story, “Humans Vs. University receives $1.4 million grant for transportation center

Missouri S&T is one of 35 universities to receive a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to establish a University Transportation Center (UTC). Missouri S&T received a $1.4 million UTC “tier 1” grant to develop robotic tools to inspect and maintain bridges and portions of highway from the air or from the side of the structure. McMillin speaks on the role of education in cybersecurity

Dr. Bruce McMillin, associate dean of the College of Engineering and Computing and a professor of computer science, recently spoke at the Missouri Governor’s Cybersecurity Summit. McMillin presented “The Role of Education in Cybersecurity” with two other Missouri school representatives. The session aimed to provide an overview of the role education is playing in cybersecurity and shared resources to help bolster skills within various organizations.

Das to co-chair SMARTCOMP 2016

St. Clair Endowed Chair in computer science, will serve as co-chair of the second IEEE International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP 2016). Madria and grad student earn IEEE award

Dr. Sanjay Madria, professor of computer science, and his recent Ph.D. graduate Dr. Vimal Kumar earned the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Best Research Paper Award for the paper “Distributed Attribute Based Access Control of Aggregated Data in Sensor Clouds.” The two were presented with the award at the 34th IEEE Symposium on Reliable Distributed Systems, which was held Sept. 28-Oct. 1 in Montreal. This work is supported by the National Institute of Standards and Technology as a multi-year grant contract for the project titled “Secure Sensor Cloud.”

Hackathon for Humanity kickoff

To celebrate computer science’s Golden Jubilee, the department will hold a Hackathon for Humanity (H4H) event. The campus community is invited to the hackathon kickoff, which will be held 12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, in Room 209 Computer Science Building. The H4H is a competition that challenges participants to create a mobile app (iOS or Android) or a web app that is beneficial to society. There is $2,000 in prize money available to participants. Computer science names two Daniel St. Clair Faculty Fellows

Dr. Dan Lin and Dr. Zhaozheng Yin were recently named Daniel St. Clair Faculty Fellows by the computer science department. Daniel St Clair Faculty Fellows are rising stars – either an assistant professor in years three to six after appointment at Missouri S&T, or a tenured associate professor within four years of tenure/promotion. The award comes with the title Daniel St. Clair Faculty Fellow and a $10,000 annual discretionary fund each year for two years.
