The campus community is invited to celebrate Black History Month at the following events:

  • Weekly Black History Month celebrations hosted by the National Society of Black Engineers, noon-1:30 p.m. in the Havener Center Atrium, on Thursday, Feb. 13, Friday, Feb. 21, and Friday, Feb. 28
  • Black Man’s Think Tank discussion, “For the Culture” 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, in the Turner Room of the Havener Center
  • Black History Comedy Show and Casino Night, 6-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in the St. Pat’s Ballroom of the Havener Center

Celebrate Black History Month this weekend

The campus community is invited to celebrate Black History Month at the following events:

  • Black History Month Celebration: 7-10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in St. Pat’s Ballroom of the Havener Center. “Harlem Nights Casino” is the theme. Join students for a comedy set performed by Nick Nichols, a comedian and S&T alumnus, plus games, food, music and raffles.
  • Dinner to Jazz: 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in Hasselmann Alumni House. This year’s theme is “Gatsby Noire” and will include dinner, dancing, poetry and singing performances. Tickets cost $30 for S&T students and $35 for non-S&T students. Formal attire is suggested. Please email abs@mst.edu for ticket information.

‘Harlem Nights Casino’ theme of Black History Month celebration

Join student diversity initiatives for a Black History Month celebration named “Harlem Nights Casino” 7-10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in the St. Pat’s Ballroom of the Havener Center. Nick Nichols, a comedian and S&T alumnus, will kick off the night with a performance, followed by games, music and food.

Black History Month events kick off on Feb. 1

You’re invited to celebrate Black History Month with campus events throughout the month, focusing on the theme of “Black History in the Making.” Events will include:

  • Black History Kickoff: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, in the Havener Center atrium. Engage with student organizations and celebrate Black history while supporting an inclusive future.
  • The Black Renaissance: 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in St. Pat’s Ballroom of the Havener Center. Join students for a showcase of music and art and hear a keynote address by Anitra Rivera, director of student diversity initiatives. Attendees can bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the student diversity initiatives food pantry.
  • Dinner to Jazz: 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, in St. Pat’s Ballroom. This year’s theme is “A Southern Taste” and will include dancing, poetry and singing performances, as well as dinner. Advance tickets are $20 for S&T students and $25 for non-S&T students until Wednesday, Feb. 14. Beginning Thursday, Feb. 15, ticket prices rise by $5. Cocktail attire is suggested for attendees. Black History Month celebration

A night of music, spoken word, strolling, dance and other performance arts celebrating the 2014 Black History Month theme of Honor, Hurdles and Heroes will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, in Leach Theatre of Castleman Hall. There will be a keynote address and light reception to follow. The event is co-sponsored by leadership and cultural programs and student diversity, outreach and women’s programs.

Learn about Black History Month

Learn more about the past and find that black history is rooted in royalty with heroes who have overcome many hurdles. Now it’s your turn to write history. Join Valentino Bates in a leadership and cultural programs-sponsored lecture to learn from the past and discover your own legacy. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, in Meramec/Gasconade Room of the Havener Center.

Black History Month talent showcase

Showcase your talents while bringing a piece of black history to life at the Black History Month Celebration. Sing, dance, instrumental, spoken word, poetry or any other type of artistic expression is welcomed and encouraged. Perform as a group or solo. Sign up at lcprograms.mst.edu. Applications are due by Friday, Feb. 14. Pieces must be relatable to the 2014 Black History Month theme of honor, hurdles and heroes. All individuals that sign up must be available for rehearsal and celebration.

Celebrate Black History Month on Friday

Celebrate Black History Month at 7 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 24, in Leach Theater. There will be entertaining performances and a keynote speech from Wayne Robinson, talent and recruiting manager for Nucor. A reception with refreshments will immediately follow. The event is sponsored by leadership and cultural programs, student diversity programs and Nucor-Yamato Steel.
