Opening Week is almost here

Opening Week Orientation will be a week of academics, interactive programs and social activities for approximately 1,500 new freshmen. The week will begin with new freshmen moving in Saturday, Aug. 12, and conclude Saturday, Aug. 19. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend all Opening Week events to welcome our new students to campus. Project X will drive new students to create, compete

The new student programs staff is pleased to announce that Union Pacific will again sponsor Opening Week’s  Project X. Union Pacific representatives will assist new students with programs and judge their projects. Approximately 1,500 new students will be divided into 85 mentor groups that are guided by upper classmen mentors. Each mentor group can create a vehicle. Vehicles will be judged on several objectives, including design, creativity, presentation and journal. Mark your calendar for races and awards on Friday, Aug. 18. Teams will race their vehicles outside Schrenk Hall beginning at 8:30 a.m. that day. Races will conclude outside the Havener Center at approximately 4 p.m. The project will culminate with an awards ceremony at 9:30 p.m. in the Havener Center.

Orientation for transfer students planned Aug. 17

Transfer Transitions, an orientation day for new transfer students, will begin at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, in Room 120 Butler-Carlton Hall. New transfer students can participate in a competition, learn about S&T, meet faculty and staff from their departments and learn about campus life. Help welcome these students to campus as you see them around. The day will conclude with a recognition dinner. Remove bikes from campus racks by Aug. 5

University Police will clear all campus bicycle racks before the start of the fall session of classes, which begins Monday, Aug. 21. Please remove all bikes from campus racks by 6 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5. University Police will remove any remaining bikes later that day. Abandoned bikes will be held at the University Police office in Room G-10 Campus Support Facility for six months.

Final 2017 PRO session set for Aug. 12

The final Preview, Registration and Orientation (PRO) session for 2017 kicks off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12. Incoming students will learn about student life, take math placement exams, meet with their advisors and register for fall classes. After attending PRO, new students will participate in Opening Week activities to prepare for the first day of classes Monday, Aug. 21. Spirit of Change — Students inspiring students

The Spirit of Change is a movement of students inspiring students. Whether it is a free cup of coffee or an umbrella given out on a rainy day, the Blue Key Honor Society inspires students by performing random acts of kindness throughout the semester. A “well” will be set up in the Havener Center Atrium during Opening Week and the first week of classes to raise funds for the program. Students, faculty and staff can drop their extra change into the well. Additionally, vehicles created during Project X will be auctioned to the campus community, with proceeds going to the Spirit of Change. In 2016, students raised $3,000 for the Spirit of Change.

Eclipse glasses, shirts available from bookstore

This was a years-long effort involving human resources, payroll and IT professionals across the University of Missouri System.
