Dr. Gragg award reception

The campus community is invited to attend a reception for Dr. Larry Gragg, Curators’ Teaching Professor and chair of history and political science, from 2-4 p.m. Friday, April 25, in Room 136 Humanities and Social Sciences Building. The departments of psychological science and history and political science will host the event to honor Gragg as a recent recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Award from the University of Missouri System. Refreshments will be provided.

Transgender Awareness 101

Clear the skies with “Trans*umbrella: Transgender Awareness 101.” Step under the “Trans* umbrella” to gain a clearer understanding of what the T in LGBT stands for, what being transgender is and how the campus community can create a supportive environment for transgender people. All levels of understanding are welcome to attend this seminar at noon Wednesday, April 2, in St. Pat’s Ballroom A of the Havener Center. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch.

Black History Month celebration

A night of music, spoken word, strolling, dance and other performance arts celebrating the 2014 Black History Month theme of Honor, Hurdles and Heroes will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, in Leach Theatre of Castleman Hall. There will be a keynote address and light reception to follow. The event is co-sponsored by leadership and cultural programs and student diversity, outreach and women’s programs.

Poetry seminar series

2014 Maxwell C. Weiner Distinguished Professor of Humanities Charlotte Matthews will host a poetry seminar series from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays in the English and technical communication library, Room 225 Humanities and Social Sciences Building. The group, open to students, faculty and staff, will look at contemporary poems and see what makes them tick. Later, the group may take on a workshop format with participants submitting original work for feedback. The first meeting will be on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Snacks will be provided.
