Geothermal system ribbon-cutting

Missouri S&T will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of its geothermal energy system at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, on the lawn adjacent to the east side of McNutt Hall. That portion of McNutt Hall showcases a fully operational geothermal energy plant. Tours of the facility will be available following the ceremony. The project, which began more than four years ago, is one of the most comprehensive projects of its kind ever undertaken by a college or university.

The science behind the One Book

The iGEM Design Team will lead a demonstration of DNA extraction as a part of the One Book Program’s series of events at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, in St. Pat’s Ballrooms A and B of the Havener Center. The current One Book selection, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, deals explicitly with genomic research and DNA. The iGEM team members will explain the nature of DNA research and lead participants in a hands-on demonstration that actually results in DNA extraction. The event is free and open to the public.

RE-CAST fall newsletter now available

The RE-CAST (Research on Concrete Applications for Sustainable Transportation) University Transportation Center summer newsletter is now available online. RE-CAST is a Tier-1 University Transportation Center led by Missouri S&T in partnership with Rutgers University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Miami and Southern University at Baton Rouge. Equality and respect in One Book case

Dr. Joel Dittmer, assistant professor of philosophy at S&T, will give a presentation titled “Equality and Respect in the Henrietta Lacks Case” at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, in St. Pat’s Ballroom A of the Havener Center. This presentation is part of the One Book Program’s series of programs related to important themes in the current One Book selection, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Dittmer’s talk is free and open to the public.

Call for presentations: TLT Conference

Educational technology is accepting presentation proposals for the eighth annual Teaching and Learning Technology Conference, scheduled for March 12-13, 2015. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Robbie Melton, associate vice chancellor of mobilization emerging technologies at the Tennessee Board of Regents.

Open mic readings at Einstein’s Bagels
