Tech transfer to be topic of faculty forum

Join the Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFE) for an early career faculty forum, “Technology Transfer, Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurship,” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, in Room 204 Curtis Laws Wilson Library. The event is designed for un-tenured, tenure-track faculty, assistant teaching professors and research professors.

CASB dean helps kick off ‘Year of the Bird’

Dr. Stephen Roberts, vice provost and dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business, will help the Ozark River Audubon Chapter kick off the 2018 Year of the Bird — a joint, yearlong effort from the National Audubon Society, National Geographic, BirdLife International and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. In a talk for a general audience, Roberts will discuss birding and wildlife encounters from the deserts, jungles and polar regions. All are invited to the event at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Eugene E. Northern Community Hall, located at 400 W. 4th St. in Rolla.

Havener Center gets new carpet

Havener Center’s carpeting is being replaced. While much of the work was completed during winter break, the project will extend into the first week of classes, Jan. 16-19. During this time, access to the building’s second-floor atrium, Silver and Gold Room, quiet lounge, and the front entrance of the Student Involvement and Leadership Center may be temporarily limited. Signs will be displayed to direct visitors. If the grand staircase is blocked, individuals may access Havener Center’s second floor via elevators and alternate stairwells.

Tips for requesting meeting, event space

The beginning of each semester creates a rush of requests for meeting and event space on campus. Requests for non-academic meetings, events and banquets are handled by the Havener Center’s event services staff on a first-come, first-served basis. At the beginning of the semester, responses may be delayed as a result of the high demand.

The new student programs staff is gearing up to welcome the next class of Miners. Ten Preview, Registration and Orientation (PRO) Days are scheduled on Saturdays in 2018:

  • Feb. 24
  • March 10
  • April 7 and 21
  • May 5
  • June 1, 8, 15 and 22
  • August 11

Opening Week will be held from Sunday, Aug. 12, through Friday, Aug. 17.

Guitar workshop planned Jan. 19

Guitarist Todd Mosby will lead an acoustic guitar workshop 4-5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Merle’s Music, located at 304 N. Bishop in Rolla. The workshop, sponsored by Leach Theatre and Merle’s Music, is free and open to the public. Please bring your guitar. Participants will learn simple principles and a systematic approach to developing guitar chops.

U.S. Naval Academy names McManus visiting professor

The United States Naval Academy has appointed Dr. John McManus, Curators’ Distinguished Professor of history, for a visiting professorship. He will serve as the Dr. Leo A. Shifrin Chair for a 10-month period during the 2018-19 academic term.
