Wright publishes new book; Malone and Dolan contribute

Dr. David Wright, associate professor of English and technical communication, recently published an edited volume titled “Communication Practices in Engineering, Manufacturing, and Research for Food and Water Safety.” The book was published by Wiley-IEEE Press. Wright served as editor and author for the book, which also features articles by Dr. Edward Malone, professor of English and technical communication, and Dr. Kathryn Dolan, assistant professor of English and technical communication.

Marley participates in ACE leadership program

Dr. Robert Marley, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, is participating in the American Council on Education’s Institute for New Chief Academic Officers (CAOs). The institute is a series of meetings throughout the year that identify topics and issues of immediate concern to new academic vice presidents and provides the means to address them. Sessions include discussions facilitated by experienced CAOs and presidents, case studies presented by program participants, conversations with peers from diverse institutions, and briefings by national experts.

Schonberg lectures on space debris

Dr. William Schonberg, professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering at Missouri S&T, presented a guest lecture about space debris in the physics department of the University of the West Indies on Wednesday, Oct. 7. While there, he also met with students from Our Lady of Fatima High School Astrophysics Club along with their principal.

Lajubutu and Hammons to present at conference

Dr. Oyebanjo Lajubutu, assistant vice provost for institutional research and assessment at Missouri S&T, and Jerry Hammons, senior business operations associate in institutional research, will make a scholarly presentation at the 2015 forum of the Mid-America Association for Institutional Research. The forum will be held Nov. 4-6 in Springfield, Missouri. The title of the presentation is “Moving from ‘Good to Great’ Institutional Research Reporting.”

Rovey earns AIAA Lawrence Sperry Award

Dr. Joshua Rovey, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, will receive the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Lawrence Sperry Award for 2016. This award honors Lawrence B. Sperry, pioneer and inventor, and is presented for a notable contribution made by a young person to the advancement of aeronautics and astronautics. Rovey was nominated by Dr. Lokeswarappa Dharani, Curators’ Professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, for “exceptional contributions to research in the areas of plasma dynamics and space propulsion, and to the Missouri S&T AIAA student branch.” He will receive a medal and certificate of citation at the AIAA Science and Technology Form and Exposition on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016.

Gragg interviewed by the BBC

Dr. Larry Gragg, Curators’ Teaching Professor of history and political science, was interviewed for the BBC World Service show Witness for its episode “Noel Coward Plays Vegas” on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Coward, the famed English playwright, singer and actor, performed at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas in 1955. Gragg provided background on organized crime in Las Vegas, Coward’s preparation for his performances and the importance of entertainment in attracting gamblers to casinos.

Zoughi gives IEEE Distinguished Lecture

Dr. Reza Zoughi, the Schlumberger Distinguished Professor of electrical and computer engineering, delivered the IEEE Distinguished Lecture on Friday, Oct. 2, at Iowa State University’s College of Engineering. Zoughi’s talk, titled “Evolution of Microwave and Millimeter Wave Imaging for NDE Applications,” provided an overview of new, 3-D imaging techniques for non-destructive evaluation of materials.

Gao and Yang featured in ‘Nature: Scientific Reports’

Dr. Jie Gao and Dr. Xiaodong Yang, both assistant professors of mechanical and aerospace engineering, had research featured in Nature: Scientific Reports this past September. The article is titled “Ultrasensitive detection and characterization of molecules with infrared plasmonic metamaterials.” Fei Cheng, a visiting scholar, also co-authored the article.
