Chancellor Cheryl B. Schrader presented an update of Missouri S&T’s Campus Master Plan to the University of Missouri System Board of Curators during the board’s meeting at S&T on April 27. Highlights of the plan include:

• improved athletics facilities
• a new clearly defined “arrival district” off of U.S. Highway 63
• student housing
• academic districts
• continued growth of corporate partnerships with further development of Innovation Park

Because of road closures due to flooding, traffic has been rerouted and is heavier than usual through Rolla. Check the Missouri Department of Transportation travel website, http://traveler.modot.org/map/, for updates on road closures and conditions. University Police reminds the campus community to avoid low-water crossings during periods of flooding. Just a few inches of water can be enough to carry a vehicle off the road. Turn around, don’t drown.

In honor of employees and their contributions to the university, Missouri S&T’s Staff Council will host Staff Appreciation Day Wednesday, May 17. The theme is “Joe Miner and the Chocolate Factory.” Events will include employee teamwork games, paint ’n sip, Bingo and door prizes. You’ve won the golden ticket to the celebration, kicking off with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. at the Havener Center. Staff awards will be presented at the ceremony. Lunch will be provided 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. The food auction will start at 2 p.m. Get more detail on Staff Council’s website or Facebook page.

S&T’s Philanthropy Fair, originally scheduled for Friday, April 28, was cancelled due to rain. The fair is rescheduled for 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, outdoors between Curtis Laws Wilson Library and the Puck.

Upcoming presentations by Smart Living faculty candidates will be held at the following dates and times:

• Alexander Maki will present “The Spread of Behavior: Helping More People Do More for the Planet” at 11 a.m. Monday, May 1, in Room 140 Toomey Hall. Maki is a postdoctoral researcher at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
• Yongchao Yang will present “Full-field Imaging and Modeling of Structural Dynamics” at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, in Room 121 Butler Carlton Civil Engineering Hall. Yang is a postdoctoral fellow in the Engineering Institute at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.
• Arif Mohaimin Sadri will present “Social Network Influence on Ridesharing, Community Interactions and Disaster Communications” at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, in Room 121 Butler Carlton Civil Engineering Hall. Sadri is an adjunct faculty member at Valparaiso University in Indiana.

Need to blow off some steam? Come flip a table and support Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma, the honorary band service fraternities and sororities at S&T, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. during “Dead Week,” Monday, May 1, through Friday, May 5, at the Puck. The cost is $1 per table, $5 for six tables and $10 for 15 tables. This popular event is not limited to students; faculty and staff are welcome.

Due to inclement weather, the Missouri S&T Observatory cancelled its recent viewing planned on April 27 and will reschedule it for Friday, May 19. Doors will open at 10 p.m. for viewing Messier 13, and again at midnight on May 19 for viewing the Ring Nebula.

Attend an open house meeting to learn more about results from a recent transit study and provide your thoughts 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4, in the council chambers on the first floor of Rolla City Hall.
