Brian W. Smith, a mechanical trades specialist-refrigeration in student affairs auxiliary services at Missouri S&T, died Sunday, July 19. Visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at Null and Son Funeral Home, 1010 Kingshighway in Rolla. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 23, at the same location. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.

Elsie Jane Jett died Sunday, July 19. Mrs. Jett is the mother of Roger Jett, who works part time for human resources, equity and inclusion after retiring from S&T in 2013. Visitation will be held from 8:30-11 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, at the Goettenstroeter Chapel in Owensville, Missouri. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to Burchard Cemetery.

Oerther earns State Department award

Dr. Daniel B. Oerther, the John A. and Susan Mathes Chair of Environmental Engineering at Missouri S&T, has been recognized with a Meritorious Honor Award from the State Department. The citation states it is for Oerther’s “outstanding leadership and attention to detail in helping to launch a public-private initiative to promote food security and climate resilience via an innovative insurance product — the Caribbean Oceans and Aquaculture Sustainability faciliTy (COAST).”

Join a Zumba or hip-hop fitness class

The campus community is invited to join in summer dance fitness classes offered in the Gale Bullman Building’s Recreation Center. Zumba is offered at 5 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and noon on Friday. Hip-Hop Fusion Fitness is offered at noon Mondays and Wednesdays. All courses are taught by experienced instructors and feature music. Classes are free for students; faculty, staff and dependents will be charged a small fee.

Weight Watchers to host open house tomorrow

Join the latest Weight Watchers series by visiting the group’s open house at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, in Room 202 Curtis Laws Wilson Library. There is no obligation to join if you attend. Costs for the series will be either $156 for 12 weeks or $186 for 17 weeks, depending on Missouri S&T’s series enrollment.
