The University of Missouri Division of Research has introduced new one-time training modules for researchers, principal investigators and others involved in submitting or managing human subjects research studies. The training is intended to improve the quality of IRB submissions, streamline the review process and increase awareness of regulatory requirements. View IRB training webpage.

Missouri S&T researchers use Mizzou’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) to provide oversight for human subjects research studies, including following MU IRB policies and procedures that protect the welfare of research participants. New required and optional training modules are being introduced to:

  • Enhance the quality and completeness of IRB submissions.
  • Streamline the review process by reducing the number of submissions returned for revisions.
  • Ensure awareness of regulatory and institutional requirements.
  • Increase awareness of study coordinating responsibilities.

New required, one-time trainings

  • Basic training
    • New, non-student researchers must complete this training module in addition to CITI training modules.
    • This module covers the basic components of the IRB application and requirements, in addition to the ethical standards embedded within IRB policies and covered by federally required CITI training.
  • Principal investigators (PI) responsibilities training
    • All new, non-student PIs were required to complete this training module as of, May 18, 2026. Starting Aug. 31, 2026, the requirement extended to PIs on amendment forms and the reliance reporting form (when relying on an external IRB).
    • The goal is to ensure PIs, who are ultimately responsible for all activities occurring throughout a study, are well-prepared for key oversight responsibilities.
  • Coordinating responsibilities training
    • Individuals submitting any type of study on behalf of a PI must complete this trainingmodule, including those on amendment forms and the reliance reporting form (when relying on an external IRB).
    • Co-investigators submitting on behalf of a PI may be able to substitute PI responsibilities training to meet this requirement depending on previous PI experience.
    • Those who completed thismodule for a clinical study in May do not have to repeat the training.
    • The goal is to ensure individuals submitting information to the IRB are well-prepared and have discussed key components of the IRB application with the PI and other study team members before submission.
  • Student IRB Training
    • Student researchers must complete this training, a requirement that took effect in August 2024.

Optional training and handouts

The Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) and IRB team has also developed new optional modules and downloadable handouts that provide more in-depth training:

Training modules:

  • Noncompliance and unanticipated problems training
  • Amendments
  • Relying on an external IRB

Handouts:

  • Completing the IRB exempt application
  • Completing the IRB expedited and full board application
  • Attaching and replacing files
  • Navigating compliance for approved projects and documents

Stay tuned for more optional trainings. Please email muresearchirb@missouri.edu to request specific topics.
