University Police report an increase in fraudulent emails and text messages targeting students, staff and faculty. These messages may appear to come from the university or from companies offering part-time or work-from-home positions.
Legitimate campus employment opportunities are posted through human resources, and some student positions may be advertised by individual departments or in Handshake. Use caution when receiving unsolicited messages advertising remote work.
In many cases, individuals who respond are sent a check and instructed to deposit it, then return a portion of the funds to the sender. The check is later determined to be counterfeit, leaving the recipient responsible for reimbursing the bank. Report suspicious messages and do not engage with unknown senders. To verify if a request about work is legitimate, call University Police, available 24/7, at 573-341-4300.
