The Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards adopted a formal policy on artificial intelligence, a code of conduct and a statement on ethics at its March 10 meeting in New Orleans.
Dr. Daniel Oerther, professor of environmental health engineering at Missouri S&T, served as president of the organization for the past two years and led consensus efforts for the policies.
The policy on AI emphasizes transparency, accountability and verifiability as critical for effective use of technology by engineers and scientists who hold specialty board certification.
The statement on ethics emphasizes holding paramount the health, safety and welfare of the public, as well as elevating planetary health on par with the public.
