Fikru, alumni publish research on public views of mining governance

Dr. Mahelet G. Fikru, professor of economics, has published new research in Resource and Energy Economics with Missouri S&T alumni Sreeja Koppera and Nhien Nguyen. Koppera earned a master’s degree in information science and technology in 2025 and Nguyen earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 2024.
Their article, “Exploring Public Opinions on Mining Governance and Preferences for Interventions to Enhance Battery Mineral Access,” analyzes results from an online survey of 1,200 U.S. residents. The study examines public support for new mining projects, perspectives on mining governance and preferences for policy interventions that could improve access to battery minerals. The work is part of a broader series of surveys supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
