The Center for Science, Technology, and Society will host a talk about the role of memorization in student learning noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, in the Meramec/Gasconade Room of the Havener Center.
Dr. Diana Mason, a chemistry educator with more than 30 years of teaching experience and former director of the chemistry education program at the University of North Texas, will present “‘Memorization’ is not a bad word!” She will discuss research from the Networking for Science Advancement team, which found that foundational skills like non‑calculator problem‑solving, strongly influence students’ academic outcomes. She will share how these findings relate to trends observed in chemistry, business and STEM courses across the country.
