Dr. Daniel B. Oerther, professor of environmental engineering, authored an article published in the Journal of Environmental Engineering, a publication of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The article, titled “Hold Paramount the Health, Safety, and Welfare of the Public and the Planet,” urge a redefinition of engineering ethics.
Building on his previous work framing environmental engineering as addressing planetary health, Oerther argues that engineers must elevate the planet’s well-being alongside public health and safety.
“Elevating the planet on par with the obligation to hold paramount the needs of the public is required in an era of global environmental degradation and a realization that all life is interconnected,” Oerther writes.
