The U.S. Treasury announced that it will discontinue production of pennies in early 2026. As a result, businesses and institutions nationwide are expected to experience a gradual shortage of pennies. Banks may eventually stop fulfilling requests for penny rolls altogether.

Departments that handle cash transactions should begin planning adjustments. Please share this information with any team members or areas that may be affected.

What you can do

Short-term steps

  • Encourage electronic forms of payment whenever possible.
  • Reduce pennies in bank deposits (e.g., if five pennies are available, substitute a nickel).

Long-term planning

  • The National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) is advocating federal rounding legislation, but no changes are expected soon.
  • As pennies become scarce, review POS (Point of Sale) systems and consider updates or manual processes that allow rounding transactions to the nearest $0.05.

Early awareness and preparation will help ensure smooth operations and minimize customer impact. Thank you for supporting this transition.
