Dr. Mahelet Fikru, professor of economics, co-authored a peer-reviewed article to be published in the December 2025 issue of Economic Modelling. “Optimal policies for decarbonization via carbon capture: Tax, subsidize, or both?” explores how governments can design effective decarbonization policies through emission taxes, carbon capture subsidies or a combination of both. Findings suggest that tax-only approaches work best when pollution intensity is high, and subsidies or mixed strategies are more effective at lower intensity levels. The research is funded by the National Science Foundation’s Economics Program.
