Missouri S&T recently welcomed five new graduate students sponsored by Iraq’s Higher Committee for Education Development (HCED), an initiative established by the Prime Minister of Iraq. The program funds top Iraqi students to pursue graduate studies abroad, and Missouri S&T boasts the largest number of HCED-sponsored students of any U.S. university.

With the arrival of this latest group, a total of six HCED-supported students are currently enrolled at S&T in both master’s thesis and doctoral degree programs.

“Our campus community benefits greatly when talented graduate students from around the world bring new perspectives, experiences and research to S&T,” says James Slone, acting director of international student and scholar services (ISSS).

“Having come to the U.S. from Iraq for my MS and PhD, and later completing postdoctoral work while serving as faculty and associate director for graduate and international admissions, I have witnessed firsthand the remarkable achievements of Iraqi students at Missouri S&T. Their exceptional academic performance, impressive research contributions, leadership, and engagement in campus life continue to enrich our community and inspire future scholars,” says Dr. Abo Taleb Al-Hameedi.

Missouri S&T looks forward to strengthening its partnership with HCED and welcoming more students from Iraq in the future.
