What’s your role at S&T?

Chyna Howell

As senior program manager in the Student Success Center, I oversee programming that provides holistic support for students. This includes managing S&T tutoring, success coaching and engagement opportunities that foster academic and personal growth. I create initiatives that enhance student success by connecting them with the resources, guidance, and support students need to thrive, retain and eventually matriculate. I’ve been with the university three years in November.

What inspired you to join Staff Council?

My passion for serving students. I see it as an opportunity to support and advocate for our amazing staff. I wanted to be part of a team dedicated to enhancing the staff experience at the university, because just as we strive to help our students thrive, we should also ensure our staff feel valued, supported and empowered.

What is your role on Staff Council, and what responsibilities does it involve?

I am secretary of the executive committee. I ensure meeting minutes are published and agendas are available, and as co-chair of the communications committee, I work closely with our chair and other standing committees to bridge communication across the council for S&T staff.

What advice would you give someone just starting at S&T?

S&T is a fantastic place with countless opportunities to grow and connect. You’ll meet many passionate and dedicated people who are all-in on supporting our students. While your role may be in one department, don’t hesitate to engage with others and collaborate on campuswide initiatives.

What’s one thing you absolutely must have at your desk and why?

Sticky notes are essential. My mind is always running, and when an idea or task comes up, I need to jot it down before it slips away. For a little fun and stress relief, I keep fidgets and pop-its on hand —for myself when I need a moment to reset and for students who might need to unwind while they talk.

What’s something about you that most people don’t know?

I don’t see myself as particularly exciting or quirky. However, it might surprise people that I live on a 90-acre farm with my husband and our five kids. We have a small hobby farm with cows, chickens and Welsh ponies. Our goal is to become more self-sustaining by growing and storing our own food while teaching our kids valuable skills. Coming from Berkeley, California, I never would have imagined myself living on a farm out in the Midwest, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
