In the March issue of Energy Policy, Dr. Mahelet Fikru, professor of economics, published research examining people’s preferences for a variety of climate policies. The paper, titled “Policy preference for a net zero carbon economy: Results from a US national survey,” features work that is partly funded by the National Science Foundation.
Fikru’s work, based on a nationally representative U.S. sample of survey respondents shows that 47% prefer reducing carbon generation, 19% favor a carbon capture and storage (CCS) subsidy, 17% support private-led CCS, and 17% prefer penalizing emissions. The study also shows that, among other factors, these policy preferences are shaped by risk and benefit perceptions of CCS.
