The University Libraries, in conjunction with the City of Rolla, The Rolla Public Library, The State Historical Society of Missouri-Rolla Research Center, R.A.S.T.A, Missouri Humanities, and the Phelps County Historical Society is proud to host a special presentation by Dr. Larry Gragg on the life and work of Inez Parker Griggs 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, on the second floor of Wilson Library.

Inez Parker Griggs, a distinguished poet, spent her entire life in Rolla, Missouri. Born in 1875 to formerly enslaved parents, Griggs began publishing poetry in 1898. Her works spanned a wide range of themes, including the beauty of the natural world, faith and eternal life, patriotism, and the significance of holidays. Though she never had children of her own, Griggs often wrote about them and emphasized the value of education in her poetry.

During the early 20th century, Griggs gained widespread recognition for her literary contributions. Some of her poetry reflected the influence of Paul Laurence Dunbar, a celebrated poet known for popularizing African American dialect poetry. Her work not only captured the essence of everyday life but also contributed to the rich tapestry of African American literature.

This event is free and open to the public.
