The Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence will host the first KEEN Community of Practice meeting at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, in Room G-11 of Curtis Laws Wilson Library. Seed grant recipients Dr. Mario Buchely, assistant professor of materials science and engineering, and Dr. Alexander Douglas, assistant teaching professor of mining and explosives engineering, will discuss how they integrated KEEN practices into their classrooms.

Buchely will present his work to incorporate a KEEN card into Metallurgical Engineering 3125 Mechanical Testing of Materials, to instill an entrepreneurial mindset in undergraduate metallurgical engineering students. The project allows students to engage in activities and discussions designed to develop critical thinking and innovation within the context of metallurgical engineering.

Douglas will present his redesign of Mining Engineering 1912 Principes of Mining Engineering. This redesign incorporates Minecraft: Education Edition to introduce concepts of computer-aided mine design and spatial awareness, which allows students to participate in mine design in a fun and engaging way.  Douglas is preparing two conference papers on the subject.
