Dr. Mahelet Fikru, professor of economics, and Dr. Li Li Eng, professor of business and information technology, co-authored an article titled “ESG ratings in the mining industry: Factors and implications.”

The study reveals key insights on how mining companies that are rated based on efforts related to environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance are different from unrated ones and what type of mining firms are likely to have more favorable ratings. Their findings also indicate that there is no correlation between financial performance and ESG ratings. The study is published in the December 2024 issue of The Extractives Industry and Society under an open access license.

This collaborative effort highlights Kummer College’s commitment to advancing interdisciplinary research and addressing critical global issues.

The study’s findings were also presented at the Future of Coal Workshop held on S&T’s campus on Oct. 11-13.
