As the Great ShakeOut event approaches, Missouri S&T urges the campus community to prioritize earthquake preparedness. Organizations around the nation will participate in the event with an earthquake drill at 10:17 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. The annual event raises awareness about earthquake preparedness. Missouri is located in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. This zone has historically produced some of the largest earthquakes in U.S. history and continues to generate an average of 200 small earthquakes annually.

Please review these earthquake safety procedures:

Preparation Tips

  • Identify safe spots and danger zones in buildings.
  • Maintain emergency supplies, including flashlights and first aid kits.
  • Learn how to shut off home utilities.

During an Earthquake

  • Indoors: “Drop, cover and hold on” under sturdy furniture or against a wall.
  • Outdoors: Move away from buildings and utility wires.
  • In vehicles: Stop safely and remain inside, avoiding structures and wires.
