Understanding the limited-submissions process

Because many funding agencies limit the number of proposals a university can submit for a competition, S&T has a structured limited-submissions process in place. This process is designed to be fair, transparent and supportive of our research community while also ensuring S&T puts forward the most competitive proposals possible.

The Division of Research and Innovation’s proposal development team uses Pivot, a global database of opportunities from public and private sponsors, to conduct a weekly comprehensive scrape of funding opportunities. Relevant opportunities are compiled and distributed via a weekly announcement on the limited submissions website.

The weekly announcement contains two sections. The first section, announced opportunities, requires an internal letter of intent by a specified deadline. These letters are reviewed by the research proposal review and mentoring panel as part of a formal internal competition. The second section, first-come, first-considered opportunities, only requires an expression of interest. These expressions are reviewed by the vice chancellor for research and innovation or his delegate, allowing for quick decisions due to sponsor deadlines.

All interested faculty and researchers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the limited-submissions process and deadlines by visiting the dedicated limited-submissions website at research.mst.edu/funding/limited-submissions. On the website, you will find details on current opportunities, submission instructions and a retrospective of past competitions and designations.
