The diversity, equity and inclusion department partners with Curtis Laws Wilson Library each month to bring a special display that fosters awareness of heritage and cultural dates.

This month the display celebrates Juneteenth, a federal holiday on Wednesday, June 19, that commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday’s name is a portmanteau of the words “June” and “nineteenth,” as it was on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War.

If you have not seen this month’s display, visit the library and register for free Juneteenth T-shirts and artist-inspired tennis shoes.
