This presentation focuses on the resilience of reinforced concrete coastal infrastructure and heritage structures. Coastal reinforced concrete structures are subjected to long-term damage due to exposure to an aggressive environment. To address this issue, advanced cement-based composite materials such as Ultra High-Performance Concrete have been developed to improve their performance. Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) has been developed with improved functional performance characteristics to improve the durability of coastal structures in extremely aggressive exposure conditions. Structural health and durability monitoring systems are being utilized for the long-term monitoring of coastal infrastructure and interventions. Case studies, including a historic water tower, the Grand Harbour Breakwater, and military defense and industrial heritage, will be reviewed.

Ruben Paul Borg is a Professor of Structural and Materials Engineering at the University of Malta, and a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Missouri S&T. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and Architecture (with honors) from the University of Malta and completed his doctoral studies at the Politecnico di Milano in Italy and the University of Sheffield in the UK. Prof. Borg has led various Materials and Structural Engineering projects, including the Sustainable Development Centre in Malta. He has been awarded the International Energy Globe Award in 2013, the Prix d’Honneur and Judge C. Curren Awards in Restoration, and the International Energy Globe Award in 2022.
