Dr. John McManus’s newest book, To the End of the Earth: The U.S. Army and the Downfall of Japan, has been chosen as a finalist for the Army Historical Foundation’s Distinguished Writing Award.

The award program was established in 1997 to recognize authors who make a significant contribution to literature on U.S. Army history. Each year nominations are submitted to the Awards Committee by publishers and journal editors. The winner will be selected this summer. McManus is a Curators’ Distinguished Professor of history and political science and received this award in 2022 in the operational and battle history category for his book Island Infernos: The US Army’s Pacific War Odyssey, 1944.

In January, McManus also gave a lecture, titled “To the end of the Earth: The U.S. Army and the downfall of Japan,” to the U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
