You’re invited to the 2024 Hurst-McCarthy lecture at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2, located in the Butler-Carlton Engineering Hall, Room 120.

In this year’s Hurst-McCarthy Lecture, “Latent Side Effects of Safety Interventions,” Dr. Jesus M. de la Garza will discuss his research findings, which could significantly influence how the construction industry approaches the development and implementation of safety interventions to offset the influence of risk compensation.

Dr. de la Garza is professor and director of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at Clemson University. He is the chair of the National Academies Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment. He is also a subject matter expert for the American Road and Transportation Builders Association’s Safety Certification for Transportation Project Professionals (SCTPP) Program.
