2023 Faculty Awards

Missouri S&T celebrated faculty excellence at an awards banquet Dec. 6. Honorees include:

Experiential and service learning awards

Dr. Daniel Reardon, vice provost of undergraduate education, recognized three faculty for their roles in service and experiential learning.

The Experiential Learning Award recognizes faculty who require undergraduate students to go beyond mastering basic skills and knowledge in the application of that material to problem-solving challenges. These activities involve collaborative and reflective learning and allow students to learn in environments that align with their aptitudes. This year’s recipient is:

  • Dr. Kathryn Northcut, professor of English and technical communication

The Service Learning Award recognizes faculty who involve or influence undergraduate students in academic service learning or community service activities outside the classroom. The recipients are:

  • Dr. Hank Pernicka, Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering
  • Dr. Daniel Shank, associate professor of psychological science

Excellence in teaching, research and service awards

Dr. Colin Potts, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, recognized 32 faculty members for excellence and achievement in teaching, research and service.

The Faculty Excellence Award recognizes tenured or tenure-track faculty members who have demonstrated sustained excellence in teaching, research and service. Recipients are:

  • Dr. Michael Bruening, professor of history and political science
  • Dr. Jessica Cundiff, associate professor of psychological science
  • Dr. Jie Huang, Roy A. Wilkens Telecommunications Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Dr. Hongyan Ma, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering
  • Dr. Jonghyun Park, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering

The Faculty Achievement Award recognizes non-tenure-track faculty who have demonstrated sustained excellence in two of the following areas: teaching, research and service. Recipients are:

  • Dr. Darin Finke, teaching professor of philosophy
  • Dr. Mary Gillis, assistant teaching professor of education
  • Dr. Theresa Swift, teaching professor of electrical and computer engineering
  • Kelly Tate, associate teaching professor of English and technical communication
  • Dr. Kelley Wilkerson, associate teaching professor of materials science and engineering

The Faculty Research Award recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in research and scholarship. Recipients are:

  • Dr. Kathryn Dolan, associate professor of English and technical communication
  • Dr. Xiaoming He, professor of mathematics and statistics
  • Dr. Chulsoon Hwang, Woodard Associate Professor for Excellence in electrical and computer engineering
  • Dr. Marek Locmelis, associate professor of geosciences and geological and petroleum engineering
  • Dr. Manashi Nath, professor of chemistry
  • Dr. Jonathan Obrist-Farner, associate professor of geosciences and geological and petroleum engineering
  • Dr. Shun Saito, assistant professor of physics
  • Dr. Haiming Wen, associate professor of materials science and engineering

The Faculty Service Award recognizes faculty who display exemplary, sustained service to the university and their profession. Recipients are:

  • Dr. Laura Bartlett, Robert V. Wolf Chair in Metal Casting and associate professor of materials science and engineering
  • Dr. Amy Belfi, associate professor of psychological science
  • Dr. Mark Fitch, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering
  • Dr. Garry Grubbs, associate professor of chemistry
  • Dr. Melanie Mormile, professor of biological sciences
  • Dr. Jill Schmidt, associate teaching professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering
  • Dr. David Westenberg, Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor of biological sciences

The Faculty Teaching Award recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and teaching-related activities. Recipients are:

  • Dr. Anthony Convertine, Roberta and G. Robert Couch Assistant Professor of materials science and engineering
  • Dr. Dimitri Feys, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering
  • Dr. Nishant Kumar, teaching professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering
  • Dr. Daniel Oerther, professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering
  • Dr. Joshua Schlegel, associate professor of nuclear engineering and radiation science
  • Dr. Kyle Wernke, assistant professor of music
  • Dr. Guang Xu, associate professor of mining and explosives engineering
