Alex Philippou, a 2022 Summer Space Grant intern at Missouri S&T, presented his work at the 16th International Conference on Wind Engineering in August, in Florence, Italy. His presentation was on the genesis, evolution and decay of tornados.
His internship supports NASA’s Mars Mission to conduct research on dust devils on Mars. Dust devils, which are tornado-like wind patterns, could affect vehicles, instruments and structures on Mars.
This five-day conference featured technical sessions on various aspects of wind engineering. Philippou ’s presentation shed new light on rotating wind patterns in the atmosphere. Additionally, Philippou and Dr. K. M. Isaac, his mentor, co-authored an article on the topic in the Journal of Wind Engineering & Industrial Aerodynamics.
