Dr. Kathryn Huff, assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy, will deliver a presentation at Missouri S&T on Wednesday, Oct. 18, focused on the role of nuclear power in the transition to clean energy and what DOE is doing to support this initiative.
Huff will speak remotely for the event, which will begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18, located in Room B10, Berlesmeyer Hall.
S&T’s student section of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) sponsors Huff’s discussion in conjunction with Nuclear Science Week, which runs from Oct. 16-20. The public is invited to attend. After Huff’s presentation, time is allotted for a Q&A session.
Narrie Loftus, a master’s student studying nuclear engineering and S&T’s president of ANS, says she is excited to have Huff give a presentation and communicate directly with S&T students and the campus community.
“Dr. Huff’s talk promises to be an enlightening and inspiring event not only for our section of ANS, but also our community,” Loftus says. “Her distinguished position within the DOE is instrumental to advocating for the role of nuclear programs in advancing clean energy goals. This event provides an exceptional opportunity to engage with a leading expert and to get informed about some important projects in the nuclear field.”
Huff earned a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Chicago. Before joining DOE, she served as an assistant professor of nuclear, plasma, and radiological engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her research areas include modeling and simulation of nuclear reactors and fuel cycles.
